After Ardon I

Yoram is greatly influenced by the twentieth-century Israeli painter Mordecai Ardon, who settled in Jerusalem in 1933. Ardon created highly textured paintings using egg tempura in his underpainting to create a spiritual radiance. Inspired by Ardon’s red sun motif, this was the first time that Yoram used the circle shape in his own works.

After Ardon II

This painting pays homage to the Israeli artist Mordecai Ardon. Yoram was particularly inspired by Ardon’s explanation of the painting as a site where “reality becomes a vision [...] of a conceived world made of abstract shapes like in music.” Yoram’s use of Ardon’s sun motif is mysterious: the uneven strip of orange paint at the top of the work suggests a flaming sunset, but the purple mass of darkening land or sea and the perfect orange circle deny any realistic sense of spatial orientation.

Volcano I

This painting is an exciting instance of improvisation by Yoram where the square motif begins to break down. The painted surface evokes certain shapes and forms, but fails to fully render them. The vertical red margin on the canvas’ left-hand side seems to suggest a lava flow, and the gestural blue paint at the bottom of the canvas conveys a sense of agitation and tectonic trembling.

Volcano I

Volcano II

Since the Romantic era, depictions of volcanic eruption have been associated with the aesthetic category of the ‘sublime’. The painting’s flaming clouds evoke the early stages of an eruption in which nature’s unpredictability and destructiveness is unleashed. The cragged surface is suggestive of uneven rock.

Windows Into My Soul I

In this piece, Yoram uses thicker, more viscous paint that doesn’t run down the canvas. The two squares are more structured and clear than in his other works, creating a sense of strength and calm. By overlaying blue onto the top square, Yoram invites the viewer to see these shapes as windows rather than bricks. The squares become illusionistic openings into another world, that of the artist’s innermost feelings.

Windows Into My Soul II

Proverbially, the eyes are “the windows of the soul”, and Yoram uses this metaphor to imbue his painting with emotional honesty. Yoram is also experimenting with recession and protrusion in this work. The windows seem to be either heavily curtained or giving us a view into an abstract interior of intense emotion.

Hamptons Fog

Emerald green and ultramarine blue vie for dominance in this densely worked painting. The thick application of resin gives the painting a glistening depth and evokes foggy moisture. As with his paintings After Ardon I and II, Yoram uses the sun motif to create a visionary sense of nature.

Tree

Viewers might read the black spatters at the bottom of the canvas as a trunk, and the squares and rectangles behind and around it as autumn leaves. Channelling the symbolic abstraction of Mordecai Ardon and early Mondrian, Yoram celebrates the beauty of nature without resorting to any hackneyed conventions of landscape painting.

Windows of Kafka

This painting was inspired by Kafka’s posthumous novel The Trial. Yoram recreates the sense of surreal dread which infuses Kafka’s book by painting windows, too blurred and too tightly packed to be literal. These windows also point to shifting perspective and point of view, alluding to the main character in the novel being framed and overwhelmed.

Wounded

Yoram has a highly experimental and tactile approach to painting: often he uses linen, paper, gold-leaf, pastel and oil paints and dry pigments all on the same surface. Yoram sometimes works with his paintings flat on the floor, which allows him to hammer nails, tear paper, rip the canvas and rub pigments into the surface with his hands rather than a brush. This work is a great example of Yoram’s intensely layered style. Using an abstract language allows Yoram to depict vulnerability in physical and psychological dimensions.

Stitching

Similar to Genesis, this work uses found material - jute from old coffee bags -  as the support. Intense patches of blue, green and burgundy hover on either side of a vertical stitch on the canvas’ surface. Unlike Lucio Fontana’s spatialist paintings with their violent gashes, Yoram’s work emphasises containment and concealment. The stitching evokes a wound, giving the work an ambivalent sense of enduring pain and gradual healing.

White Fog

This work is part of Yoram’s Nuclear Blue series, which uses a particularly saturated and matt shade of blue that evokes divinity, nature and danger all at once.  The diffuse blue square in the centre of this heavily textured painting is reminiscent of foggy morning by the sea. The square’s ethereal white outline gives the work an airy quality, a sense of waves breaking or the breeze passing.

Turbulence

This work is composed of six squares, packed within each other like Russian dolls or Chinese boxes. The squares’ imprecise edges create a feeling of instability and impermanence. Unlike the stretched linen of a canvas, jute is irregular and rough: it offers the perfect surface to evoke emotional turbulence. “I love how jute absorbs a lot of pigment and how far the pigment goes into the fabric,” Yoram explains, “it gives the painting real depth.”

Floating Squares I

This painting shows multi-coloured quadrilaterals of different sizes, superimposed on one another. These shapes are roughly outlined, emphasising the boundary between their coherent shape and the chaotic marks at the works’ edges. For Yoram, the work constitutes a reflection on how beauty can emerge from the chaos of his own lived experience.

Floating Squares II

Yoram sees his paintings as failed attempts at dominating chaotic impulses. This failure is immensely productive: Yoram uses deep colour, densely scoured surfaces, splotches and smears to create a jostling mass of rectangles in the right half of the work. The painting’s deep blue ground unifies the surface of the canvas, creating a sense of calm and stability amidst the tumult.
